About Gemstones, Shells & Metals

Stems & Stones fine jewelry is a precious possession that is designed and crafted to last a lifetime. However, proper care is required to assure the lasting qualities of your jewelry. We take pride in our work and set high standards in the craftsmanship of our handcrafted jewelry. As with every product its life span will depend on the care you give it. Here are a few simple guidelines and tips for the care and cleaning of your jewelry.

  • Always apply all cosmetics, perfumes and colognes before putting on gemstone/silver jewelry - as these products may cause jewelry to become dull.
  • Always store your jewelry in a cool, dry place when you are not wearing it. Make sure your silver is not exposed to air and light during storage, which can cause silver to tarnish. The box that you received your jewelry in contains a non-tarnish cotton that's ideal for storage. Also zip-lock bags and cloth pouches are good ways to store your jewelry and will help prevent tarnishing or scratching by other pieces.
  • Avoid bathing or swimming with your jewelry on.
  • Avoid abrasive jewelry cleaners especially if the pieces have an oxidized finish and/or contain semi-precious gemstones. Using harsh polishing cleaners can damage your jewelry.
  • Clean: After wearing, wipe your precious gemstone jewelry thoroughly with a clean, soft, slightly damp cloth. This will enhance the gemstone's luster.
  • Never immerse your jewelry in chlorine, salt water, mineral springs, and suntan lotion.
  • Never use an ultrasonic cleaner, ammonia or any chemical solution to clean gemstones. The chemical can cause discoloration to the natural stones.
  • Polish: Silver can oxidize with time. So to maintain the original condition of your silver jewelry, polish your pieces regularly using a non-abrasive jewelry cleaning cloth.
